About KwaZulu-Natal Amphibian and Reptile Conservation:
KwaZulu Natal Amphibian and Reptile Conservation was formed by Nick Evans and the Earth Organisation. It's purpose is to create awareness and educate the public about the most feared and misunderstood creatures in the world. It was originally aimed at the Greater Zululand area only, but has soon incorporated the whole of K.Z.N. Amphibians, and especially reptiles, strike fear into the hearts of most people. They're considered evil, ugly, slimy monsters. This is particularly true in South Africa, where a lot of people have negative beliefs about snakes, which makes them terrified of them. This means that they usually kill them. This is far from the truth. They are vitally important to our environment and play a big role in it. KwaZulu-Natal is a hot-spot for both amphibians and reptiles, with a high diversity of species. With this being the case, there is a lot of conflict with humans, which results in these innocent creatures being killed. There are also a few snake bites in the area every year. So an understanding of these wonderful animals is important. We are focused on the conservation of our beautiful amphibian and reptile species. We believe that creating awareness is the first step toward conservation. After all, the smaller, less liked creatures need looking after too! We believe in conservation through education. People need to be taught to respect these creatures instead of fearing them. We offer educational and awareness courses and programmes, frogging evenings/tours, survey work, handling for film crews, snake removals and more. Anything involving amphibians and reptiles!
About Nick:
Nick Evans, was born and raised in Durban, KwaZulu Natal. From a very young age he had an interest in wildlife. In his early years, after watching Steve Irwin (The Crocodile Hunter), he became hooked on snakes! Since then, they have grown into a lifelong passion. He's spent his life looking for and catching them. It's not just snakes he loves though. He is passionate about all wildlife, but reptiles and amphibians have a special place in his heart. He has developed a keen interest in photography and videography, to keep records of all of his finds. Nick has been doing snake removals since his early teenage years. He has also volunteered and worked in reptile parks since the age of sixteen. He has gained experience in frog survey work, working with film crews, guiding around Zululand and more. Conservation is his passion and he is determined to make a difference and save the wildlife people fear.
